Recently opened in 1988, the vast tracts of wonderful foothill and alpine country in eastern Nepal can now be visited. It is reached by daily scheduled flight to Biratnager. A high and ever-ascending ride line, the Milke Danda, separates the two main river basins in far eastern Nepal.
The Arun River cuts through from Tibet leaving the Makalu Massif (8,463 m) towering above the western and southern flanks of the mighty Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). Both these great rivers join the Sapta Koshi - the largest river to drain Nepal.
